You know, I kind of hate when people start threads like this because it feels shitty to have a thread shitting on a player's art where they likely can see it. Especially when it's a perfectly nice accent.

If you are the artist, please don't lose heart. Looking at the list of "what should have been accepted instead" posted in this same thread, people are miffed that the usual winners didn't get picked. Every single "this should have won" pick is from one of the big name artists.

DA from OP
but none of those artists except 888 enter festivals regularly? auroshen hasn't had a win since 2018. i think you're getting popular Uma artist and festival winner mixed up, anon

Thus why I used the term big name artists.

subthread op

as the person above me said, with the exception of 888, none of those artists have a strong history of wins in festivals?? and only auroshen and 888 are artists i’d consider especially big names in UMAs in general, even if others in the group have shops running.

this is purely my own personal opinion, and it's based on the standards I listed + a general (albeit still subjective) sense of quality in rendering and lineart. and honestly I chose to provide it as a kind of palate cleanser to my being an admitted hater in the op! just wanted to give some positive shout-outs as well.

That's why I said your list was big name artists.

"I'm going to rain hate on folks who won because I don't think they deserved it, but look, I rained love on these popular artists. That makes it fine."

That may not be your intent, but that's what I read it as.

popular artists are popular for a reason

as discussed, just because two are big names does not mean all of them are.

and in general it’s weird that you seem to think that i would like an entry specifically because it is from a “big name,” rather than any of the other factors that would cause an artist to find success selling UMAs to begin with.

If you're reading this, artists: You got picked for a reason, and it means staff thinks that your work represents the flight!

Thanks. But it's still killed any excitement I had over winning, especially since I've seen more comments picking at the entry than otherwise. Oh well.

AYRT

This might de-anon me somewhat but,
I understand that feeling, one of my festival wins got torn into in a previous year and it made me take a long hiatus from submitting at all.
I promise the number of people who like and will use your accent on their dragons far outweighs the drama-site folks who are picking at it. It says more about their behavior than your art.

i don't mean this unkindly
but

this IS a comm where people go to bitch about things, and generally discuss what they either wouldn't consider appropriate to say in "public," wouldn't say off anon, or both.
if two or three anons not liking your !!winning entry!! can get to you badly enough to kill literally all your excitement over that win, anoncomms may simply be too negative a place for you, and i'd earnestly suggest you do yourself a favor and not visit them.

I'm sorry to hear that.

genuinely. i understand the benefit of constructive criticism, and i don't mind people pointing out aspects of the winning entries that could be improved. but there's a big difference between "hey i wish the artist had shaded the horns" (concrit, this is a very fair and specific critique, it's not personal at all) and "here's a list of people i think deserved to win over the people who did" (i don't care about the intent, this looks petty and like you're putting some people down to lift other people up).

Seriously. That was the point I was trying to make, and instead, they just attacked my word choice. Criticize the flaws. That's fair. The list of people more deserving of the win immediately after is the issue.
