Yeas that's really what it comes down to for me. People exploit impressionable kids for money on a kids website. When I was a kid I donated to a charity art drive (on another old adoptables site for kids) and the campaign runner got drunk and told me she just used the funds on booze anyway because she was alcoholic and poor EnoGH to be a recipient of charity. This was after I said I was sorry I couldn't give anything to her when she made a post about how she couldn't afford food. She just said she used the charity drive money for herself even thought the she also drew thank you art and in public said the drive was for a specific charity

So I don't think these personal details should be mentioned at all in order to prevent dishonest artists from getting kids to nrg their parents for money to "help" or give away money their own earnings because they think someone "deserves it more" it is just guilting a lot of sensitive kids who don't know better

If someone is an alcoholic and doesn't get booze, can't it be life-threatening? I don't know why you're shaming someone for trying to save their health

Because the treatment for alcoholism isn't more alcohol. The treatment is medical therapies and rehab. Alcohol will not help them.

Thats not exactly true - someone who is severely alcohol dependant may have life threatening complications if they go cold turkey. From what I've read, sometimes hospitals will sometimes have beer in stock to prescribe to people who are dependant to avoid these complications.

In the long term, you are correct! I just wanted to share a fun fact. :)

I am a recovered alcoholic. I have been through the paces, and medical treatment CAN involve *medically prescribed* alcohol, but it's not THE treatment. That is not what I'm talking about, and you obviously know it.

I think they're just trolling. It's true that quitting cold turkey can cause major problems for an alcoholic, but you'd have to be spectacularly stupid to think that justifies someone lying and scamming to feed their addiction, or that they're "looking after their health" by doing so. Scammers deserve to be shamed all day long.

Yes I did not reply to them I just laughed hard at how weak it was. Looks like they did get some peeps to start debating the treatment of alcoholism tho. Kudos to the recovered commenter for smacking that BS down

It is also, to my knowledge, illegal to collect 'charity' and use it for something else.

If it isn't illegal, it is incredibly shady, and should be illegal.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-31 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You're correct it was illegal. I was around 12 or 13 then and really looked up to them so I didnt let myself question it too much. It hurt to admit they robbed me because I had asked my parents for some money for the drive and I thought this person was a friend. Artists scamming kids is not that uncommon because living off art is tough and kids are vulnerable. For the troll reading this ;) everyone knows I don't mean artists are all scammers but allowing personal details in sales to appeal emotionally to kids who are emotionally not mature yet is irresponsible of not just the adult artists who know kids are reading their post but of the site since it is for kids. It is ok to make a sales post with personal details on an adult oriented site or your own personal page but not a kid oriented website. Even if you have good intentions or bad never crossed your mind allowing those details to influence your sales pitch to kids on a kids site is wrong

To be honest, I don't like things like that even for adult oriented sites, because adults can be just as vulnerable as children when it comes to charity.

I am thinking about like a decade or two ago, there was at least one (thought I heard of more, but can only really think of one) child who had a lemonade stand to 'pay for her cancer treatment'. She got like tens of thousands of dollars from adults, because she was a pretty little girl who was dealt a hard hand.

Then it was found out, the parents took the money and used it for their OWN desires, AND the child didn't have cancer at all. She was used by her own parents to get money from people who were willing to donate. (I think this may have been at the start of all the 'gofundme' type websites, and so they were in the news a lot, and people were jumping on the bandwagon to get money from people who would see 'cute child' and 'trouble' and 'need money' and open their pocketbooks.)

So, yeah, I am sure that most of the artists on FR are perfectly nice people who do need money. But, sadly there will always be people who will leap on the bandwagon and use sobstories to get money.

Just think of all those people in FRD who would go 'I accidentally sold my superexpensive item for 1K treasure instead of 1k gems' and people would give them 'replacement' items. People are often generous, and that is great. However, at the same time people CAN be scammers who want to prey on those generous people.

I agree a hundred per cent and the lemonade stand story is a perfect example. And E even if the artists need can be verified verification is invasive. So advertising neediness in a general art sales forum is invasive to the forum members too because it puts a burden of proof on the artist but the burden of asking for the proof on the purchaser. I don't think the artists with "good intentions" are as benevolent as they seem because they are not so much selling artistic skill as they are leveraging guilt while betting no one will actually ask them for proof because it is invasive and embarrassing for both artist and the potential buyer for different reasons
