Well, HERE'S a dragon name I wouldn't care about if they hadn't previously named a dragon "HPLovecraftCat"!

I just wonder was it there and always named something that could be a slur, or is this because the last one was renamed.

As ESL I always fear that an innocent (to me) word I use will be interpreted as a slur. Why is this name bad?

Generally, people are more than willing to give you the benefit of the doubt if you genuinely didn't know and don't use that word in your vocabulary in that context anymore.

In this case, spook is usually an OK word but it has historically been used as a slur against black people. Since the user has a pattern of behavior being racist (previously named a dragon another racial slur reference) it's safe to assume they DON'T mean it in an innocent way. I hope that helps you! Don't worry to much about accidentally using words with bad history attached. Even if you are anxious, often a simple Google search will let you know.

Nobody in all my years of living in the south among actual, literal Klan members have I ever heard the word Spook used as a slur. Stop scaring ESLs into thinking they'll be accidentally racist for using the Halloween word, you people are the reason we have to suffer through people saying "spoopy"

Dude, why are you being so hostile? Just because you've never heard it used as a slur doesn't mean it doesn't have a historical context of it being used that way. Stop calling people 'ESLs', and take your attitude off a response just trying to reassure and explain to someone genuinely asking what was wrong with the dragon name. Fucking wanker.

Also, what the fuck? You live among actual Klan members?

yeah, they still exist :/ when my partner was in HS (00s) some of his classmates' dads were openly klan members and they even marched in the town parade.......... i'm guessing they're still around 15 yrs later, idk if they're allowed in the parade still tho

Christ. We're getting off-topic here, but that's really terrible to hear.

The person you replied to specifically said it’s generally an ok word, it’s just questionable here because of the context (that being that alucardpuppy has made a blatant reference to a slur already, so it’s suspicious for them to use it in another dragon name given their previous behavior). Nowhere did they try to scare them. They literally reassured them it’s fine.

(Also I’m too from the south and knew it’s been used as a slur historically, so not really that unknown.)

(Also x2, people say spoopy for the same reason they say doggo and pupper and can I haz cheeseburger - the internet loves to spell words funny and say things goofily. It has nothing to do with people afraid to say spooky lmao.)

There's a good detailed NPR article covering the history of the word.

https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2017/10/24/559502238/this-halloween-what-does-it-mean-to-call-something-spooky

Honestly, a dragon containing that term would normally not get a second thought. Especially a ghost or Halloween themed dragon. No one is going to call you a racist for discussing a spooky haunted house. Context is king here. I use the word spooky frequently for Halloween.

But this dude kind of doesn't get the benefit of a doubt with the now renamed dragon. Obscure potential racism after that previous name is the issue.
