I'm usually of the opinion that as long as a person is doing all their own work, ie not tracing or stealing other people's shit, reusing an idea is fine. It can get tacky when someone is being really obvious about their source/inspiration, though. Originality may be overrated, but putting your own spin on something is still a good idea.
