Re: Gem and item cycling

I wonder if someone out there kept track of when Wildclaw Scrolls (and other items) cycled in and out. I am kind of curious if there's been any semblance of a schedule or if it's just arbitrary. Kind of convenient that they're dumping it right when Christmas season is revving up. Pretty unfortunate too because it's coupled with a decent gem sale and is really pressuring people to get in on it despite the state the world is in and an huge, upcoming holiday.

Oh, and before anyone gets offended and makes this weird: I think it's perfectly okay for the staff to want money since running a successful site aint cheap. I don't blame them for wanting money especially around the holidays and are coming up with ways to increase sales to fatten their pockets. But to pull it off as a toxic FOMO stunt without any heads up to its consumer base doesn't look good on their part.

i dont really think it's this serious. its only "fomo" in that you cant purchase them directly from the site, these cycled items can still be purchased from other players at a slight upcharge. most games offer black friday/cyber monday sales so it isnt surprising at all that FR is doing the same.

i think cycling gem items is stupid but calling staff "toxic" for this just feels silly.

I should have specified, but the staff themselves aren't toxic for doing a FOMO, but rather the business model of FOMO itself is known to be toxic.

I know its tracked for wildclaws on the wiki. Don't have time to check the rest

Also, can I say, I'm kind of confused at the amount of hostility on a Cyber Monday gem sale?

I understand that the cycling is shit timing, but no one faults Walmart for these kinds of sales on unnecessary shit. Why is the pet site not supposed to try to make money to stay open like they do?

And before someone starts attacking me: FR has in the past had some of the most bizarrely against supporting a site they enjoy people I've ever seen.

I have seen players brag they never give the site money as well as blocking ads before.

I understand not having money to do it, but they act like its a badge of honor to do it and look down on gem buyers.

I'll own to feeling accomplishment for being filthy FR rich (as in, I'm not able to bid on that Boolean currently up for sale, but I'm more than a third of the way there in pure gems) without spending RL cash, but that's mainly because of the 'hard mode' factor. (And the reason I personally don't is because getting involved with anything remotely resembling microtransactions is too slippery a slope for me to feel comfortable with. That doesn't mean others aren't capable of making sound individual decisions about whether a given amount of FR currency is worth a given chunk of their RL entertainment budget, so no looking down there.)

With regards to why FR is heavy on the phenomenon, it might be because, unlike many other sites (that I know of, this one already takes up way too much of my brainspace, so I don't actively hunt for more), it's actually possible to be a hardline no-spender and still not be locked out of anything. Such types probably wouldn't be on a site where certain items/functionality/etc were only available to paying customers in the first place.

Fair enough, and if you can, more power to you. You aren't telling people they're lesser players for supporting a site they enjoy. That's the ones that annoy me.

I toss a 10 or 20 every so often and cut a junk food purchase or two to get gems every now and then. Better for my health.

Do you have any proof anyone is saying that gem purchasers are lesser? Or are you making shit up

ty for the wildclaw schedule.

Oops, sorry that I came off as hostile. I can, however, 100% promise you that people definitely are displeased with larger businesses doing this sort of thing as well you just wont find it on an anon drama petsite probably.

DA tbh the only thing i'm really annoyed about with this cycling thing is how short it is. they usually cycle in WC scrolls for longer than 4 days, or at least they did last time. ....i think. maybe. it's honestly been so long i can't remember but it feels like it was longer, so forgive me if i'm wrong about that.

also the fact that there wasn't any warning. we're usually given at least a little heads up, i think.

yeah, by now some players might have already spent their fun money for the year/holidays

Honestly, I have less problem with pet sites doing it than big business. At least this isn't keeping someone at a job on the holiday when they could spend it with loved ones.(I worked 8 hours on Thanksgiving.)

Re: Gem and item cycling

(Anonymous) 2021-11-29 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, this exactly. i feel a lot better about a virtual BF purchase than an online or in-person one where i KNOW all the workers+shippers are hating every second of their overworked shift.

i really hope the rest of your turkey day was enjoyable, anon.

It was. I had the next day off, which I spent at home and not out in the insane sales. I will not encourage any in person Black Friday sales on principle.

Re: Gem and item cycling

(Anonymous) 2021-11-30 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
i don't think people are upset with the cyber monday sale itself; i think people are upset with a gem sale in addition to cycling in strictly gem store items that haven't been in stock for the last ~8 months. it heavily encourages "buy gems now while you still can before missing out on these items for another year!"

saying it's "shit timing" makes it sound like staff didn't have a choice in when they cycled items back in. looking at the schedule, it looks like this (gem sale + bringing back cycled items to encourage fomo) has never been done on fr before.

also... fr to walmart is apples to oranges lol. you can still buy that $500 tv at msrp after the black friday sales without needing to wait a year.

Re: Gem and item cycling

(Anonymous) 2021-11-30 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Guess I'm strange. Because the buy gems or you'll miss it pressure is there no matter what, and at least I'm getting more gems for my money this way.

Re: Gem and item cycling

(Anonymous) 2021-11-30 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
you can still buy the cycled-out items from other players year round, though. not buying them from the gem MP while theyre cycled in doesnt mean you need to "wait a year" to get the items..?

did you just forget that the AH exists?

Re: Gem and item cycling

(Anonymous) 2021-11-30 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
sure you can pick them up from the ah any time of the year, but if you want the cheapest option--especially if you want to buy multiple wc scrolls and don't want to pay at least ~300-500g each more than they need to--people will wait until they're cycled back in.

da

furthermore, I want to point out that a good chunk of the userbase are super casual and don't make a lot of treasure on FR so they rely on outright buying the gems from the site to buy gem items from the AH/marketplace, OR save up for a loooooooooooong time. I'm sure a lot of people in this anon community can whip up 300-500 worth of gems with ease but our experiences aren't universal and 300-500 gems can mean a lot to the more casual userbase. People like them benefit immensely on the recycled WC scrolls as well as the bulk buyers, etc.
