One thing I always love about this kind of drama is that usually an artist who is concerned about the work they invested in their art says something like this, and then 20 non-artists and known drama-monging artists come up and go "WELL IT'S A GENERIC TROPE OKAY" instead of having an actual discussion and go full into attack mode.
have seen it for literal years now on FR. it's mindblowing.

and honestly sometimes it's so goddamn banal it's insane. imagine someone having copied your accent in which you invested you now, lifetime in to draw, and then suddenly you have 20 people screaming at you "well AKSHUALLY the leaves in the second version have THREE blades but yours only ONE, are we not allowed to use leaves in accents anymore??? are you copyrighting leaves??" which is absolutely not the actual discussion intended, it's just meant to derail and make the original artist look bad.

I think this is why the conversation on Saltmine got so bad. That's why (even though the anon has since apologized and I can see past it, but I still feel it's worth using as an example here) the people who are uncomfortable with this and see issue with it are getting called idiots, because it's what those people are portraying them to be, and thus a ton of fighting ensues and the subject becomes less directed towards Hemophobia and more towards the people defending Hemophobia, but all the people outside of the argument see is constant talks about that person in particular, and thus the water gets muddied.

For real. I don't know why this discussion, especially over on tumblr, turned into blaming the skin artists. Clearly Hemophobia's work was a bit of a ripoff in some aspects, yet the original artists are getting attacked for daring to use horns or plants in their art. Nobody's claiming they own those themes. How dare the artist use a generic theme*, this is their fault! (/s).

*And use it in a unique enough way that you can easily recognize when it's being copied.

I've seen this exact kind of drama over the years now so often, it's really no surprise to me that accent artists leave the website, release less or don't want to be interacted with.
you really wonder why you actually create those things then. and why you invest time into making stuff for people who apparently give no shit about the artist and art. gotta make that dragon pretty after all.
yes i know accents aren't big giant illustrations and whatever, but you still invest time and energy into them nevertheless. also big shoutouts to the people who go "if you submit an accent it's official a FR item now". way to miss the mark.
