I mean, they could also be going with a Flemeth/Witch of the Wilds theme for all we know.

And honestly, there's so many variations of the soul eating, swamp dwelling witches in many different cultures/countries, that you can't really jump to the cultural appropriation accusation. Even white folks have their variations of soul sucking witches in the South and Appalachia.
