I agree with ayrt, so just call me grandma. But realtime chat is a very different paradigm from message-board-style communication, and I've loathed it since AIM. Doesn't bother me so much being discord-less on FR because I honestly don't want a more active role in my flight's dom activities (or even socializing, honestly), but still salty about it in general because of having been edged out of other stuff in the past because I couldn't keep up with chats.

thanks for actually articulating this. I like 'both' forms of these communication types but i can see how the live chat one can really be off putting to some

It's not only that it's offputting in its interaction style - fast, and competing message threads, demanding immediate appropriate responses rather than after some thought - but it's actively exclusionary per location even when you have those abilities. You have to be online when people are doing things and making decisions, and that is very much not possible for a lot of people.

right, right. makes sense for sure! The reason why I personally enjoy it is because of the inherent chaotic environment of it, especially for silliness. It feels more like 'talking' to me, an illusion of it. But as you said it's not good for decision making, unless there's a scribe at hand but thats not the point of course.
