it's already pointed out that it's a mod and not staff, but like, why is it weird that staff do human things and post like that every once in a while anyway? Does it somehow break your immersion of "professionalism" or something?

It's like when high-profile professional writers get down in fan forums. They have a lot of social power, and aren't on the same footing with everyone else, and pretending they are is burdensome.

That is an interesting dynamic. Kinda sucks for them, not really being able to play like a normal player

Most of the mods aren't particularly popular tho

This is why on many/most games, GMs/staff/etc. have "undercover" player accounts as well as their account that they use to moderate. That way they can play normally without imposing any unbalanced social dynamics on people, but can also perform their duties as well.

I would prefer if the volunteer mods would have a separate mod account, bc people keep brown-nosing the mods for some reason which is really annoying and creates this weird power dynamic.

I've seen people kiss mod ass on other sites but not on FR. Seriously I barely even see the mods on FR, just the staff.

Except that they're a volunteer moderator, not paid staff. Mods are human beings too, and since they use their account to play on, they should be allowed to interact with others in the forums in a mature fashion. And there's nothing immature or unprofessional about this thread either, so I don't see the problem?

I don't really think it's weird at all. I'm friends with one of the volunteer mds and we chat on discord regularly, in private dms because we don't share a flight anymore. Unless you act up on the forums, there isn't really an issue between mod/normal user dynamics. You don't have to do anything a mod says unless they're doing an actual mod action (such as title changing, censoring sexual content, etc). Nobody is forced to do anything at all. Mdos are people and can play the game normally like regular people, and they do. There is no faux pas in posting fic or comm links if ou wouldn't scrutinize it from a normal player.
