Mix apple cider vinegar and water at a 1:1 ration. The vinegar can also be substituted for an essential oil such as citronella, lavender, peppermint or lemongrass (1 part oil to 3 parts water). Just make sure not to spray it when the animals are actually there, as essential oils sprayed right ON/in front of animals, especially cats/ferrets/birds, can kill them.

You can try orange and lemon peels (cats dislike citrus scents), the herb rue which can also be planted live, cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco and various oils, including lavender, lemon grass, citronella, peppermint, eucalyptus and mustard.

I personally used a mix of cayenne/coffee grounds mixed with borax and sprinkled it around my porch/near my windows to keep rutting cats away. Bonus- borax sprinkled around doorways/windows will kill any fleas feral cats can carry!

I used to live in an apartment with so many feral cats that the fleas were DESTROYING me, and this mix helped keep them away.

holy shit this is genius, I will try it out later. I don't mind them sitting in the garden and doing whatever cats do at 3am, but directly under my window (my garden is pretty big) is ... please don't. but feel free to sit on the other side of it.

I hope it helps =D cayenne/coffee grounds is cheapest- borax is cheap, too, keeps fleas out, and you can use it for EVERYTHING. Bathroom/kitchen cleaner, a boost to dishwasher/laundry detergent, scatter it over carpets and vacuum it up for fresher carpets, mix it with sugar where you see bugs like ants- they'll eat the mix and it kills them!

Honestly, I love Borax. You can just google "uses for Borax" and SO MUCH STUFF comes up. It's like 3 bucks a box or so depending on size and it's a MUST HAVE for budget friendly living.
