People are extremely bad at understanding that the contest is not about “best” skins. It isn’t about pure drawing or painting skill or creative ideas. It is about skins that suit the site’s established flight aesthetics.
Even after a guide to fest entries was posted, the direct response in the early Earth fest contest thread was painterly, photorealistic skins. Skins about content not previously described as Earth flight lore. Following a style guide is its own skill separate from painting and drawing.
Most people just don’t want to follow a style guide when they’re submitting to a game art contest. They want to be acknowledged for expressing themselves. That’s how people are about hobbies.
Most players, in response, don’t really want a person’s self expression on their dragon. They want something Flight Rising related.
In any case nobody is in the wrong for wanting particular stuff here. The absolutely wrong choice is, of course, to continuously harass their fellow players for following a style guide.
