"Like, if they removed birthdays - not even years, the date itself - because it's sensitive personal information, why did they add official lgbtq vistas? "Hi, I'm trans" is OK to know about a random player but "Hi, I'm born in March" isn't?? Explain that to me like I'm 12..."
Obviously don't know fr admins reasoning but maybe it is because your birth date is something on your government id and all that jazz. At least that's my best guess.

Someone being gay or trans isn't potentially a step towards identity theft. Birthdays are.

(aayrt? the anon that asked the question in the first place)

But it is?.. Someone saying that they are lgbtq could easily be the initial incentive to start shit, from "plain" harassment to doxxing to the same identity theft, because various phobias-based bad behaviors are far more common than straightforward identity theft. I don't buy this explanation.

I don't get your point, people have been adding their identities online for years now, and as long and you practice the minimum of internet security no one's going to dox you or actually steal your identity simply by knowing you're not a straight cisgender person lol

My point isn't what players do, but what the site officially does - and they remove official birthdays due to "sensitive information" without any plans to return them but then couple months later add lgbtq vistas as if they don't have similar "sensitive information" problems.

Because... they're literally not the same? How exactly is someone knowing my gender the same as they knowing my exact birth date? What can someone possibly achieve with the first?? It's not sensitive information.

The only way I can imagine your sexuality or gender identity being sensitive information on its own (in this context, at least) is if you’re closeted and would be in danger if someone found out you were gay or trans or whatever. In which case I imagine you just wouldn’t use those vistas or any visibly identifying symbols anyway.

Birthdays are arguably much more sensitive as it’s easier to use a birthday to find someone’s identify than their pride flag. It’s the same reason you shouldn’t share your full name or street name on the internet. Sure, just the month/day might not seem that bad in the grand scheme of things, but it’s probably more than staff wants to risk on a site with kids.

That’s not to say someone really determined to find someone’s identity can’t do it based off seemingly innocuous information like gender identity or sexuality, but they can also do that based off forum posts you make about your dog or your favorite restaurant or something. But that’s still harder to do without easily identifying information like your name or location or, yes, birthday.

Plus, using a pride vista isn’t a guarantee you actually identify as that. I can go stick any pride ribbon I want on me right now - it’s not proof I actually identify as that. Your birthday is a little less up in the air.

Also, as far as using it to Harass someone - anyone can use any aspect of the site to harass someone. You like wildclaws? Harassed. You exalt dragons? Harassed. You have the pirate vista? Believe it or not, harassed. The good news is that’s already against the rules and they can report those users and block them. Not sure why the possibility of jackasses means staff shouldn’t make pride ribbon vistas available for people who choose to use them. That possibility will exist with every little thing. The mere existence of drama blogs shows that.

Honestly, starting to feel like this is a poor faith argument. I can gain access to serious things like stealing accounts knowing a birthdate and a few other pieces of info. I can't do that with just knowing someone is a lesbian.

I never said they are the same, I said they are similar. Hopefully you are aware that there are enough weirdos on FR or other sites that specifically choose non-straight people and then try to follow their links to other sites, google their usernames or try to find other information from various tidbits... Frankly, without a birthyear, I'd ask what you can do with only birthday as it doesn't contain any automatic positive or negative (or even true) information. Regardless, looping back to my original comment, neither birthdate nor lgbtq status are necessary to play FR, and both can be considered sensitive information (privacy laws and policies frequently lump them as examples of same point), hence I still do not understand - and you don't seem to be able to provide any explanation - why they are treated differently.

Except there's a page full of people who have provided you with an explanation. I agree with the person who said they feel like this is a poor faith argument. You know that the person you responded to meant "same" to mean "similar". You are choosing to equate sensitive identifying information with what a person identifies as/with and they are not "similar". Saying, "I'm a lesbian that likes dragons," is not the same as giving someone information they can then use to get into your accounts or track you down in real life. All I'm getting from your argument is that you have a problem with pride flags, but are looking for some type of argument that makes you look like it's a logistical issue for you and not what it actually is.

Staff didn’t remove birthdays to stop harassment. They removed them because a birthday is a lot more traceable to a person than gender identity is, and this is a site full of minors.
