ID verification

Why the hell are people on SMR so fucking obsessed over this ID verification shit? There are risks on both sides! It's a dead horse, for the love of god why do SMR users keep beating it?? Literally no where but this one drama blog have I seen this issue get dragged through the mud so much. There is no winning.

Different people weigh different risks differently! It's almost like adult humans are individuals who can make educated decisions for themselves based on available information. Stop shoving the information around with your passive aggressive bullshit and let people take it in at face value.

Ofc it's FR tumblr that insists that either side is the moral high ground and that isn't going to change. I'd like to beat this into their thick skulls but I don't think I'd even chip the surface so I'm gonna bitch about it here instead. God, just as we had some good wanker material, this cranks back up.

Yeah, and honestly, even with 'ID Verification' you can't be guaranteed that it is actually the user's ID.

I mean, they don't know the real name, and that should absolutely be blocked out, so what is to say they don't grab their mother's or father's ID card, block everything out but the age, and they are now 18+

Plus, the whole issue, to my understanding, had nothing to do with verifying age, but the entire fact TOS says that linked material must adhere to FR's TOS. Which means no NSFW stuff.

AYRT

Yeah, and that's just another risk to be taken, y'know? Like it's all give and take, no matter what side you're on. You're making a gamble whether you allow people with or without verification. I'm personally on the side of verification, simply because I'm an old internet coot and verification for age has always been a thing for NSFW spaces I, personally, have been a part of. But that's my choice to make, as an adult.

And yeah, at the end of the day, the only reason this shit is kicked up again is because some dipshit or another decided to bring it up in the comments and another one decided to submit an ask about it. When it isn't even related to the topic at hand. At all. Ugh. I'm just exhausted with this topic, I thought they'd gotten it out of their system with the first round of it.

Personally, I am on the side of not having NSFW areas associated with places that minors are able to access easily. IE, like a discord linked to a game that is 13+ and structured in a way that it is expected to draw in younger people to play it.

Having a NSFW discord is fine, but don't link it to FR or associate it with discords that try to make themselves the 'official' X flight discord.

This is largely where i'm at in this, tbh. Adult spaces are fine and have a right to exist, but having a smut channel on a flight hub was a powder keg waiting for a spark.

it's hard to be sure without more context but i THINK this might be about the ask i submitted to SMR

if so, i definitely did not mean to remotely imply that asking for ID should be a thing; literally was just pointing out that "omg they didn't have any way to prevent minors from lying about their age" is like... the nsfw channel shouldn't have existed regardless, but that "but they could lie" shit is par for the course for the internet, and for good reason (see: the link mindlessflight posted below).

On the same boat as you, anon. Wasn't there a whole discussion about this months back on another server that tried to suggest this 'real ID verification' thing that went down badly? The consensus was that sending literally any type of real ID is dangerous and can be used against the user who sent it, and that the admin would be in real trouble if it was found out that the user who sent it was actually underaged.

It is practically a lose-lose situation. don't put an NSFW channel in an FR Discord server, because it will be linked back to FR, and it goes under FR's TOS. Simple as that.

it might just be me but it seems that the usual posters on SMR as of late has been really unbearable as of late because it seems for them, there can only be one viewpoint and nuance is thrown out the window.

What's funny about that is when this discussion first started, SMR took down the post that everyone used to talk about the issue. Wonder if they'll take down this post too. :P

yes, that time it was dakkokki. links to the arr threads here:

Yeah but that discussion was related to a server that was already supposed to be 18+ and wasn’t linked on fr itself.

Re: ID verification

because SMR mods are extremely shit at moderating the content posted to the blog.

it doesn't help that there are people that insist sending someone your censored ID is fine with no risks. your ID can't both be censored enough to not dox your personal/sensitive information but also be uncensored enough that someone can verify you didn't just find a picture of an ID online to lie about your age/identity. you can only pick one, not both.

but yeah it's an old subject and SMR should probably delete the asks instead of spending their time deleting already posted asks with important information.

Thanks mod, was about to go n try to find this exact post. ID verification by random FR/Discord users is inherently dodgy as hell.

I have personally regained access to gaming accounts with my Id. Passing it out is dumb.

THANK YOU FOR LINKING THIS
for real I am so tired of people casually giving out personal information on the internet
you think it's harmless, but it's not! I've had friends who were doxed because of their name and birthday being known. (and in more extreme cases.... their new house that they moved into found on zillow because people compared photos of their *fireplace* that was in a picture they posted to fireplaces of homes on the website of the city they were located)

ANY information is risky :(

I personally find it absolutely funny that a couple of weeks ago smr had a shitstorm about "arr doxxes people with IPs!!!" and now they are having this "discussion" about ID verification. Absolutely amazing ignorance.

bro what??

there are barely any asks on SMR that even so much as reference ID verification. iirc the person who dropped the screenshots for clout (1sun1spirit?) said something to the effect of LFD having nothing in place to stop minors lying, but they're the only jackass to come close to both referencing ID verification and saying it should be a thing.

why are so many people in this thread acting like this is a huge thing over there

There was a little more of it in replies to some posts here and there

Still not nearly enough to classify as "all over" the blog though
