What other pet sites are out there? Any recommendations? Preferably something that doesn't have everything but the ugliest and most basic stuff locked behind premium currency, if possible. Looking at you, neopets.

Wasn't there a neopets spin off at the same time? It had zombies and stuff?

Off the top of my head (and you might try looking at other posts, because this is asked pretty often), Sylestia, Gryffs, Aywas, Furvilla, Chicken Smoothie, Khimeros. Leayphs. DragonCave.

and a ton of others ,but mostly those are dead or dying.

sylestia is fun but grindy, in an rpg battle kind of way

battles actually do require thought, though, and there is a storyline you can go through at your own pace

Pet customization is different than in flight rising, it works by actual color hex codes, a slightly more complex gene inheritance mechanic than fr, "costumes", and also leveling up your pets is challenging but rewarding

the breeding-for-stats and catching mechanics is not unlike pokemon, actually, if you are into that

(also there is equipment! stat distribution and rpg party mechanics matter!)

the events and contests are fun too

Yeah, I am currently on a break from Sylestia. Still check in, but too grindy for me at the moment.

But I do love the pets, and the art is nice as well.

Chicken Smoothie is slowly dying due to lack of care from staff and mods allowing blatant scammers to run rampant - I've been on the site since pretty much the early days but honestly cannot recommend it to new users in good faith.

What’s wrong with chicken smoothie?

I have recently learned they are not paying their artists anything for the pets they make for the site. I always assumed they would at least get some kind of compensation, at least in Chickendollars (Gems equivalent on FR), but nope. They don't get anything.

Even tho FR has its own flaws, they at least pay their developers and artists in cash money.

...

That is shitty, but... Why are the artists doing art for them if they aren't getting paid?

It's volunteer based, so it could be out of love of the site and wanting to gain more experience in this type of field. It also gains more eyes on your account and your work - I recall one site artist who went on to make a few mobile games and got a decent audience due to them being a popular site artist.

Of course, this doesn't excuse CS from not paying their artists, but this just may be what people are thinking when they want to apply.

Re: CS in general, I wouldn't recommend playing CS to my worst enemy. I've been a long-time player and I've grown sick of the site. The community is quite rancid as well, and the economy is basically fucked. Imagine what it's like to have a Find a Dragon thread, where no one reads your requirements and just throws whatever at you. That's basically what trading on CS is like, which if you can't draw or like to live in the forums, is all you can really do. But that's what happens when it's available to all ages and you have a demographic that's mostly children who legit can't read. CS's conception feels like there was no thought for the future of the site - it was kind of just a "i wanna draw wolves and make an adoptable site :33" type of thing that out of a stroke of luck took off.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, though - with the values of pets all over the place because it's community based, when that community is always trying to squeeze as much value out of their pets as possible, it becomes a mess to figure out and is really difficult for someone new to make sense of, let alone work up in.

It's foolish optimism on the artists, greed on the site's. It's not like it costs them to throw the artists even a bit of site currency...

Subeta!

Re: OT Thread

(Anonymous) 2022-05-18 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Same anon. I'll expand: Subeta is a "petsite" in that you can have pets, I think max 60 or something though it takes a while to open new slots. It's also got an expansive dress-up aspect which allows for custom wardrobe items from users (basically the equivalent to FR's custom skins and accents, but for a humanoid avatar). It is also insanely item-based, over 70,000 unique items with ever-increasing art quality, so collecting is huge. I think some people can be overwhelmed by it, but the site has a "no item is ever permanently retired" policy so there's always more chances, and as you play you acquire lots of items. If you like getting New Stuff and Things, collecting, dress-up, writing and coding pet profiles (full CSS support for it!), this site has a lot to do.
