This now makes me wonder how those breeding card sites work. I know some of them will have you input the dragon's ID manually, or their information manually then it will generate them. Do they pull from the FR servers, or did they basically download all the possible combos?
Yeah, I can see being upset that a good tool is no longer available, I know I have had a couple of moments myself in the past when certain websites/tools I wanted to use are no longer available.
But, in the post about the mirror, there were people blaming it on Akiri being a cop, so FR now has a 'cop mentality' because they were cracking down on people 'with no warning'. Yet, FR tools has been banned for years at this point.
It is like people getting a speeding ticket and arguing 'I was only going 4 miles over the speedlimit, you can't ticket me'. Like, speeding is a crime, and just because most people didn't *bother* to crack down on it, doesn't mean it wasn't still against the law.
FRtools, the skin maker specifically, went against the TOS. Just because they didn't bother to crack down on the use of it doesn't mean they liked it, nor that it was okay to use.
i'm not super surprised tbh they never gave me the impression they were pals with SMR or anything just in the same ecosystem and they tend to be pretty logical lol
ayrt- Good point. It does feel like he cares more about looking good to the community instead of the community itself. Seeing all these people defending him on salt-mines is confusing the heck out of me tbh, I don't know how you read that email exchange and see him as a martyr
This may be unnecessary because as noted in the announcement post, this anniversary isn't planned to be A Gigantic Event. However, personally I'm holding my dailies just in case there are any kinds of bonuses, new gathering items, or anything like that. If anyone else feels the same, remember not to do your dailies between rollover tonight and 6:30 FRT.
I thought about that problem as well and went to look them up.
Taking a quick look at some of the generators on Google, what they essentially do is help create the /text code/ that can be pasted onto your forum post, and don’t actually take the (live?) data from the website itself.
The hatcheries with images are usually all handmade by the users themselves. The really basic ones use the small images from the website itself, and list down the genes / colors.
The same with one of the sites that I’ve used once (it was for dragon auction making) and it really had you manually input every bit gene/colour/etc. of the combo so that you don’t have to actually type the code, the website does it for you. It was a bit tiresome, but it basically did everything internally to spit out a code to paste on the forum. So no live downloading going on here.
In the cases of all these sites, they were all generators for either text codes, so there wasn’t anything hitting ToS.
Oh I absolutely hate the coo comparisons as someone who actually belongs to a minority that cops, uh, do cop bullshit to irl. I know how moderation works - they're basically doing standard mod operation, even with the tempban (even kf original van is unjustified - if staff believes it is and it stayed... it's gonna be in infraction history), and like... website mods here are not actually hurting you.
stopppp one time a complete rando on SMR said i was gaslighting them when i asked for proof of a very serious claim. literally made me say "HUH?" out loud
Did you read the Dev Update? We were warned this year is going to be smaller.
A Final Note On Our 9th Anniversary Celebration
Because our engineering team has been devoting attention to wrapping up the refactor projects on our slate, we want to let you know in advance that this year’s anniversary event is a little more low-key compared to previous years. There won’t be any new major events or features, but we still have plenty of cool stuff to share with you to ring in another successful and amazing year on Flight Rising. While we know this might be disappointing to some of you, the decision was made in line with our commitment to an anti-crunch philosophy. Regrettably, COVID has also played a factor for some team members and their families, and we needed to make sure they were given ample time to heal before heading back to work.
So, don’t worry—We’ve still got gifts for you! It’s more that we need you to know in advance that this year’s anniversary event won’t quite be the two week affair of discovery and hype like last year’s.
Sadly I don't think many of these people actually realize how sites work.
They aren't 'public' in that you are allowed to do whatever you want. They are technically 'private' in that the owners of the site can tell you the rules and if you don't follow them, they will 'punish' you for doing so.
So, of course if FR says 'don't link to this tool' and people ... keep linking to the tool, yeah, they are going to eventually crack down on it.
I have the feeling the reason why they are specifically cracking down on it NOW is that they have said they are getting closer to being finished with the whole refactor of the site, so they have more time to look at various things, such as people linking to this tool and this tool scraping their site.
Even that forewarning makes it sound like it'd be more than what we got though. It reads like hey, this year won't be another dustcarve dig or introduction of a new site mechanic, but it'll still be an anniversary celebration! Then we get a handful of okay-at-best items and some updated art that most people barely look at? The announcement doesn't even seem like an anniversary post, just a regular update we could've had any other time. The whole thing just feels meh.
Because a lot of people, like me, don't understand what 'scraping' is. I guess I just have a bit more critial thinking skills, because while I wasn't sure what nensec was doing was scraping, it sounded like he was pulling images from the FR server, which no matter what you call it, I doubt FR would like.
So, when Nensec said 'I got banned for scraping but I wasn't, teehee staff don't know how to internet or code', people believed him, so even when he showed proof that, no matter what you called it, he WAS in the wrong, people believed him, because he SAID he wasn't scraping and he made a tool that people liked. Add in that these same people hate authority and probably think they are being edgy or whatever term you want to use, by flouting authoritarian rules?
Of course they are going to be on his side, because FR staff evil and mean. and have a hatred for skinmakers.
Thanks, I figured that it would be something like that, because I have never heard of FR cracking down on them, and I know they used to be very popular (not sure how popular they are now, as I don't use them anymore)
I just remembered a couple of sites had previews, but have the feeling they did something like you mentioned rather than having it actually download the images from the site itself.
Yeah a handful of items feel kinda meh in comparison to previous annis bringing things like the eye update for example (even though that was kind of a shitshow due to the vial drama, it was still a pretty significant new mechanic and added an extra dimension to dragon breeding)
I'm not /that/ concerned about it since I honestly didn't even know the anni was coming lol... I guess we'll see what else, if any they have to unveil in addition to the engineering revamps.
Yea, the other problem was we didn't even get the full set of new vistas, just one for each flight, while the vistas for other areas and the actual ability to change vistas are TBA. That's my biggest problem with this anniversary update is that it is an early-stage WIP.
It feels like they rushed into this anniversary idea very late in the game and missed the deadline. It feels like they're missing a lot of deadlines lately or not prioritizing tasks effectively. And while the vistas themselves are gorgeous and mostly well done, some of them do seem to be of poor quality in some areas. I'm looking at the Tsunami flats artwork and it seems like it was haphazardly finished on the right hand-side.
So to answer the question if this was enough for an anniversary. No, they definitely could have done more, and I'm worried over-praising of the little work they did for this anniversary will incentivize them doing /even less/ for future events.
they clearly said that theyve been struggling from covid and chose to not crunch to make it a bigger event like people were expecting. its ok to be disappointed, but i dont think this is setting a precident at all.
Are you suggesting crunch? Because this is how you get crunch.
Already this year we have gotten two Arlo sites (each including new apparel, two new genes and multiple new familiars), three more new modern genes seperate from Arlo (pharsac and sparkle) as well as an entire new breed with its own unique genes and many smaller updates every month. The anniversary update alone has given us eleven new full art pieces, a scene, a vista, a familiar and two apparel.
Staff has stated multiple times last and this year that they have multiple projects going on behind the scenes that are taking a lot of time. They told us in advance that this anni would be smaller specifically to avoid overworking their already busy engineers.
It's a petsite. It's not some big company and staff haven't been lacking or silent before this. The idea that they are not working "enough" and need to be pushed to crunch by the playerbase is a wild and rather disturbing implication.
