Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit. I didn't think they'd ever really do anything on this front, certainly not specific vials.
Sympathy first: I know this announcement sucks for at least two camps, the 'heavily invested in Scattervials' camp and the 'inescapable randomness of natural eyes is more fun' camp. Unfortunately, however this shook out, some portion of the userbase was always going to be unhappy, and I'm genuinely sorry for anyone whose plans or playstyles were disrupted by today's announcement.
(Personally, I'm a little disappointed that they went the single-vials route. Something involving a little more chance or effort could have been fun, I liked the daily reflecting pool idea or eye transfers with a chance of failure, something that wasn't "Pay X money and get X thing immediately" but you could still work towards getting any eyes on any dragon with enough patience.
But I've craved tints on my oldsters too long to quibble about HOW it's finally going to happen so long as it is. Well, almost finally, going to go crazy on Unusuals now and then wait on the rest until GG when I've got a MP discount. Sorry about the timing, Water, hopefully you'll get dom again soon!)
I've never cared about the 'most eyes are so small that you can't really tell the difference between tints unless you zoom way in' thing. Yeah, it's a couple of pixels, and if it's NBD to anyone on their dragons then great, but I like having even the tiny fiddly little details optimized.
Oh and another note, I am surprised they didn't just unretire the scatter scroll and just have it as a gem scroll for like maybe 250 gems or something? it would have kept the RNG appeal to eye types alive for breeding and g1 hatching but still give people a solid avenue of approach if they wish to pursue it to get another eye type for their older dragons. But either way I am pretty pleased with the update, lol
...I finally decided to sell one of my hoarded Scattersights so I could get an accent I really wanted juuuuust before this announcement dropped. It didn't sell. Not even mad, just can't believe how incredibly bad that timing was.
On the bright side, now my lair can be full of Multigaze and Faceted dragons if I want! No more keeping special-eye dragons just because you might never get a more perfect dragon with the right eyes!
Random eyes were fun camp. I'm disappointed and thrilled at the same time. But hey, the vials are pricey enough that a good colored primal has value. Just a more reasonable one.
And you have to grab one from the MP/AH as well, which makes it a bit more difficult. If nothing else, a beautiful Primal's going to go for 500kT at bare minimum because buying an identical dragon + vial will cost at least that much, and if you're into rarer-colored dragons then that Primal might still be the only available dragon. It's not game over, just changes the pricing equations again.
It's also possible that great double/triple G1s will get even more expensive now, because people can slap any eyes they want on them and so there's more competition.
That's where I'm at. I'd bought like 10 of them, but the rest are ones I got for free. I didn't want to sell them because I figured I might need them for a dragon, and I figured we wouldn't get them another way with how the admins were talking. I'm not upset that we now have individual vials, as its a good thing for so many people, but I really wish I'd sold the ones I had.
That's how I feel about my breeding project dragons. To someone else looking at them, they could have been gene-scrolled, but they weren't, it took me lots of time, calculation, lairspace, and fighting the RNG to incorporate all the genes I wanted, and they're more satisfying to me because I know I got them the hard way. The existence of gene scrolls for people who want to use them doesn't change that.
I hoarded mine too, though only those I personally brewed/grinded for. I don't think you can really beat yourself up for over something like this, whether the eye system got changed or not was always going to be a binary set of circumstances, and whichever decision you made you could easily end up regretting depending on whether the vials continued to climb in value or were completely nerfed as we saw today. (I'm not one to be all But the staff PROMISED!!!! in general, because as has been mentioned in many other places, we've seen other feature implementations that were sworn would never happen. That said, I do find the wording of the announcement thread a tad disingenuous about 'we promised no more scattersights and we're keeping that promise', especially this follow-up post: https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/ann/3004107/67#post_47417076 Obviously investors didn't buy up stacks of the things because they expected them to increase in value just by virtue of being retired. Making them obsolete by the implementation of new, simpler, cheaper versions is a good decision for the site (IMO) but it sucks for those specific users and it would have been a display of kindness to make some acknowledgement of that, rather than rules-lawyering about it.)
