i respect the hustle but the people who have 10kG+ on hand to buy a single dragon are also the ones who will not be dumb enough to spend it on this lmfao. also some of those ones near the bottom..... ive exalted g1s like that without thinking twice
Dude what. I've bought beautiful pre-gened doubles that were half the price of some of those fugly dragons. I actually like a few of them listed but not in hell for those prices.
"Some are priced high as we are tentative on keeping them"
Right... Because that Clay/Fuchsia/Phthalo is just so good that someone would have to pay 2.5kg to pry it from your hands because you like it so much. I get that taste is subjective but that's no excuse to jack up the prices to this extent.
Yeah, some of them are good, like that Moon/Coral/Blush is a pretty neat scry, but it's not 10kg worth of neat, at least to me. Best of luck to them in actually selling anything at those prices.
Now I am admittedly out of the loop when it comes to G1 collector prices, but I've come across so many nicer unbred triple basic G1s for near fodder prices. I cannot imagine buying some of these for more than 1kg, maybe that's just me though..
I'm pretty familiar with G1 pricing and I would say 75% of all G1s don't go for anything over 300g. Most random hatches are fodder. If I ever get a nice one, I price it around 500g-1000g usually, and these are things that I know are popular colors. About the most I've ever seen non-overpriced XYZs go for (not including outliers like glitched dragons, 2-letter names, etc) is like, 5-10kg *at most*. And it's very rare to sell an XYZ for that much. Even one-offs don't usually contribute much extra.
Theu're never gonna get their dragons to sell for those prices, but it sounds like they're digging their heels in. I feel bad for any buyers they get, honestly. (I would archive the post but they said they'd haggle down to 75% of the regular price... which is still like 2.5kg. Sure.)
they seem chill about the feedback and making the change, so they probs just had no idea. but i'm also a little baffled as to how they were so clueless to begin with bc they're veteran players and checking the AH would give you a clue immediately. i guess it's like they said, they had an emotional attachment to them.
Last time I put a gen 1 up for sale I was tentative on selling, I put it at a price I thought was unlikely to get offered, but enough I wouldn't feel bad about a sale. But it was no where near the original prices.
This was "I think my dragons are beautiful gems worth so much". And getting reality dropped on them
Really, their business sense is junk, and you can see it in how they handle their commissions:
- You get no WIPS, no updates, no previews, etc. and you cannot ask for them or else they privately blacklist you. They do commissions at their pace only. - You get no say in how commissions are done and they have complete artistic freedom; you don't get to ask them for anything specific, which is especially bothersome because most of the affordable commissions they take are 'zoom ins' on one part of your character like teeth, eyes, etc. One person commissioned this way and they got a signature with their dragon's tail taking up only ~35-40% of the image. - They get to interpret your character however they want, and again, you can't tell them how to interpret your character, so you better hope that your reference sheets have all the details you need and pray they heed them.
They charge high because their work is pretty quality, and I can absolutely concede on that because it IS gorgeous, but they will not give you the standard courtesies of commissioning. They've had a few DR posts about them a few months back.
So yeah, I can 100% believe they'd be this stubborn about charging an arm and a leg for junky g1s.
Man, I was hoping to commission them, but that's...
Never mind lol.
I'm an artist who doesn't like doing a million edits, either- One of my regulars had me do a character design and I didn't have a set number of edits in place... ended up doing almost two extra hours of editing the lineart.
I'm definitely changing the number of edits I do before I start charging extra, but I'm still going to OFFER them, because no changes at all, paired with "Up to my interpretation"? No way.
If I'm paying that kind of money, I want the result to at least be SIMILAR to my character design.
I assume so, which is cool on them! I don't wish for them to fail just because I find their terms of commission to be immensely discourteous - it's on the client to decide if that's what they're willing to deal with when they think about commissioning.
Does anyone have any links to the previous DR posts about them? I've almost commissioned them in the past and now i wanna know more about the bullet i dodged lol
Honestly tried to look for the posts again, but it's hard to find from months back. That said, all the DR posts were just parroting the terms of commission from their art sales thread and their carrd and finding them outrageous.
as someone who's done art work for the furry community before, i've had more than my fair share of customers who will nitpick and request changes for every little detail. even worse are the cases where: send a WIP, customer approves, then after moving onto a late-stage process of the art... they request major changes that could have been made after the initial WIP. it's absolutely exhausting. so in a way, i completely understand having a flat "no changes/edits" policy. it's too cut and dry for me, personally, to allow no changes whatsoever, but damn do i sometimes wish that weren't the case for certain customers, lol.
(on the other hand, i've never had this issue with FR customers before; if only taking FR commissions was reliably sustainable)
I've found that a fixed number of edits, like 3, and charging a fixed price for each edit after that is a fine policy. It cuts down on the nitpicking while still allowing for customers to ask for changes. Not allowing major edits at all after the initial WIP unless it was an oversight on the artist's part (like something on the reference was missed) seems okay too. (Minor edits are more reasonable, because going from sketch to lineart can really change a piece's look.)
I also have done work for the furry community, and I make it clear from the very start that I only allow a certain amount of revisions for each step of the process (5 for sketch, 3 for lines, 3 for flats, 2 for shading) before I charge extra as a part of the contract people accept when they send in the form to commission me. If you request major changes to the composition that makes me have to change things at the sketch level, and I'm at the colour phase, you compensate me for the time I already spent and we start again. I never tell anyone they CAN'T ask me for changes at all, just that you're entitled to a certain amount of fixes at every step before I charge for additional ones for that step.
If my clients later don't like my terms or refuse to pay for the extra changes, then I communicate that I have to continue on with the process, or they're welcome to a partial refund minus the cost for the work I put in already, and they can keep what I already did for them to finish for themself or find someone else who can finish it for them.
I don't blame people for being exhausted because that's what happened to me before I added in those clauses to my contract, but if you get paid for a job, it's your responsibility to do it right. If you don't do it right, refuse to fix it to make it right, and then don't allow people to edit it as necessary to make it right when it should have been done right, that's really terrible business sense.
