You know, I actually find it fascinating sometimes how thoroughly Christianity managed to steal older pagan traditions that people are claiming them as religious symbols.
Because what you see as people using Christian imagery and claiming it as secular, I've always seen as using the more neutral non Christian iconography for a more open holiday season.
I guess it's just a cultural and upbringing changing point of view issue.
