Whenever you unlock a new set of five slots for your lair or slot for your hibden, don't buy new permas. Instead, use the slot(s) to age and sell/exalt fodder. Use an AH filter to buy the cheapest hibernation-capable hatchlings possible, and hibernate them. Wait. Use the "Dragons Eligible for Exalt Bonus" filter in the den edit page to prioritize dragons you can immediately sell/exalt that day for a bonus.
Every slot in your den holding a fodder hatchling is earning you $$. Same with every slot in your lair which has a for-sale or in-training fodder adult. Every slot with a perma in it instead is costing you (due to opportunity cost).
If you're going to use your nests, avoid keeping breeding pair dragons around during their cooldown unless you really like them (or are experienced enough making enough money through the "non-fodder" bred dragon market to offset the opportunity cost of using additional lair/den slots). It's more cost effective to buy breeding-capable fodder, then resell/exalt them once the nest hatches. This way, your five nests only take up ten dragon slots in your lair at a time.
